Joe Sweeney, the perennial congressional candidate who has been disowned by the Republican Party this year because of his occasional loony racist, anti-Semitic and anti-gay mutterings, is on his way to becoming a GOP committeeman.
Sweeney, who is challenging Democratic Congressman Raul Grijalva, ended up in a tie in the September primary for a precinct committeeman slot with Daniel P. Szewczyk. Both men got six votes.
At today’s Pima County Board of Supervisors meeting, Sweeney’s name was pulled out of hat, making him the victor in the race. Yes, you read that right: Sweeney won his race by having his name pulled out of hat.
We’re still waiting for Pima County Republican Party chair Judi White to call us back about Sweeney, but we’re starting to think we’ve done something to really upset her, since she’s ignored our last half-dozen phone calls in recent weeks. Judi, what happened between us?
